There's an amazing difference in the vocals between Dave and Stevie, Back then, Stevie sounded like Ray Charles' young brother whereas Dave sounded like...well, Dave. In other words, Dave was speaking the truth but Stevie certainly wasn't. Dave was ( and probably, still is ) ourstanding.

I was a young 20 year old Royal Engineer Sapper as part of an Engineer Squadron constructing an airfield on the Isle of Unst at Baltasound when this was a hit . . a great song that brings back great memories.

This is just an astounding work. It is so haunting. I don't know how he ever captured this, or even conceived of it. As You Said is a tour de force on an album that is itself a tour de force for the band. It just doesn't get any better than this.

My granddaddy used to sing this song to me when I was about four or five years old. One of my first and few many memories I shared with him until he was called home in ‘06. I listen to this song because it makes me feel closer to him.
